The Monon Trail is a rail trail that runs entirely through Indiana. The Monon Railroad was a popular railroad line that ran between Chicago and Indianapolis, stopping at major settlements along the way. The portion of the line between Indianapolis and Delphi, Indiana, was abandoned following the decline of railroad travel and the sale of the company in 1987. The trail in Northwest Indiana is 4.4 miles long, running through Lake County from Munster to Hammond. The trail runs through Hamilton and Marion counties in the Indianapolis area, connecting Indianapolis, Carmel, and Westfield. The trail has been extended to Sheridan, making it 24 miles long in total. The trail’s initial sections were built in the late 1990s, but it has been consistently expanded in both segments since then. The trail is a shared-use path with trailheads, park amenities, and nearby attractions.
